I've always adored WHITE CHRISTMAS. Especially when it was in the BIG APPLE during the opening of BROADWAY or maybe in the mountain behind my house in the WESTERN PANHANDLE of the BOOTSHAPED PENINSULA on the MED...but honestly in NOVEMBER 3" of white which sort of stares at you from the ground behind, in front and on top of the house is sort of incongruent. It is the major existential challenge of the week. To drive or not to drive to MOM's house where she is expecting me for three days of merriment. The roads look pretty clean but Bro has gone out to get the oil changed in his car and will give me some feedback which will permit me to decide my destiny, or rather, my destination for the day. So in the meanwhich I am sort of kind of enjoying the whiteout which is staring at me from the ground in the yard under the trees in front of the house...thankful that it was today and not next THURSDAY when I have to get to the airport.

another term - ancora in sella
was really glad to have been able to partecipate in the expectation and excitement of the presidential elections 2012. It was quite a moment for me and I can imagine that even Obama is pretty thrilled. Understatement of the year I'm sure. Democracy at work always excites me. After having lived in Italy for so many years and having been away from the American Dream...it is good to see that 4 more years, another term allows Obama to continue his YES WE CAN - into YES IT'S POSSIBILE...everyone working together as he said in his acceptance speech. Good luck Mr President in another term.

spiced boiled tongue - lingua bollita speziata
http://www.gettyimages.it/detail/foto/pig-tongue-raw-meat-fotografie-stock/88274775
this morning I did the grocery shopping in a store which I usually don't head to often because the parking is underground(which I hate) the fish market is right up front near the entrance(and it smells, how bout this, FISHEY) and I usually never find anything which whets my whistle(the extra h is for balance). This morning i had a big surprise. Today was pork day and they had some lovely pork tongues(hence the link with the foto of pork tongues - otherwise why would anyone put a link of that nature). To make a long story short I adore pork tongues. Second place is beef tongue because it is usually too big. Pork tongues are pretty small, say, as long as your hand from wrist to tip of middle finger. Otherwise how would they fit into the pigs mouth right. So I decided to get a two-pack(if beer is in a six pack then two tongues in a pack are a two-pack) and brought them home to make this:
SPICED BOILED TONGUE (U could also use beef if you have a big family or just get 1 tongue per tongue eating person in the family)
one heavy pot
2 tongues
1 large onion in quarters
1 carrot peeled and chopped
1 celery stalk complete with leaves
about 20 cloves
about 20 peppercorns
about any kind of spice that you like in fairly large quantities since it has to boil and spice up the meat...
some salt...kosher large grain about 1 tablespoon
cover the whole shebang with boiling water(this immediately seals the juices into the meat - also works for beef) and put it on the stove to boil until a sharp knife slides into the tongue (OUCH) . At this point the tongues are boiled properly...take them out of the broth to cool. Take the veggies out of the broth and throw them into the garden wet garbage. Dump the cleaned broth down the toilet....no one eats broth from tongue...when the tongues are cool you just skin 'em and eat 'em....I am a tongue purist and just eat the spicey tasting meat with some extra salt ground on top...but then you could eat them with chutney or with ketchup(blah)
1 cipolla grossa tagliato in 4
1 carota pure tagliato dopo averlo pelato
1 gambo di sedano con foglie
20 chiodi di garofano
20 bacche pepe nero

ASK BAR ASK BAR
today I was presented with a new line of special clicking possibilities right under the big B where the www and blogs show up with their complete HDSL...it says ASK! and it gives me the possibility to listen to the radio in a click. Lots of channels to choose from, lots of types of music, lots of...then there's YOUTUBE in a click, and METEO CHANNEL and CERCA...all in a click. They didn't even ask me if I wanted it they just sort of flipped it in the top position and VOILA' everything in a click.....
so why didn't they put it there originally making life simpler right from the beginning?
I've never been able to listen to the radio with MEDIA whatever it's called. I've had to put into preferred all the meteo sites I adore. I've even had to prefer lots of blogs which were hard to find once I mistakenly lost them and logically I had to learn that the search button on the left is really not the one you use to find things...you have to use the little blue G button on the far right so...finally a smart bar on the computer...HELLLLOOOOOO?

the wind is howling in and around the olive trees. The Med is churning and boiling. Just closed the shutters and am listening to M.Nature preparing an incredible Atlantic Storm which should pass through the Ligurian panhandle. With all the noise the wind is making I'd say it is practically on our doorstep...almost time for hot chocolate and a good book! logically I'll also have a wonderfully warm beaglcuda on my legs and a soft blanket...just like LINUS

good intentions buone intenzioni
Now that I have a new pc under my desk which sort of makes me wonder why they call them DESKTOP computers, I have to admit life is simpler. I no longer have crashes which keep me from writing and writing and reading and reading even in FBook where crashes are normal every day happenings (from what I've heard from others). I no longer have to wait for the coffee to filter(forever when you want java right now) for the little green lights to finish filling their little rectangle...which means forever even when you already have your coffee after waiting for it to filter. But all my good intentions to put in blog fotos were destroyed when my little digital took a trip to Florence and remained there. Not that it won't come home but at the moment the person who should bring it home is in NEW YORK(that's another story) exhibiting her art whilst I await my not too artful fotos which are sitting somehwere in her apartment in Tuscany. At least one of us(her and the camera) are in wonderful places enjoying, her-bagels, my digital-life under the Tuscan sun...or rather life in Tuscany because if it is getting sun it means that someone else is using it. So for now I can only write and have good intentions about putting in fotos. If I'm not mistaken I was in this position whilst I waited for the new pc and I had already assured you, my faithful 25, or is it 30 now, fans who read my blog faithfully that the photos were up and coming. Sorry...hopefully it will reappear rested and ready to roll around half October....
abbiate pazienza

LASAGNE? - LASAGNE?
Let's just put it this way...I am not the mood to cook. Maybe because I've been 24/7 in the kitchen all summer with temperatures which literally make the Sahara look like it's air-conditioned. I've made 15kilograms (that's around 33 lbs) of various types of jams, chutneys and cousins. Which makes for a long summer if you include preparing around 15, 1/2kilo containers of eggplant parmigian, tons of beans already shucked and peppers galore already in the freezer keeping each other company along with the usual pound of pesto in tiny globs for easy use and the 10 or 12 packs of chopped skinned tomatoes...so as you can imagine this morning when I found myself kneading some flour with an egg and then preparing chard with onion in a saucepan and adding necessary ingredients for a LASAGNA?(for want of a better name I called it LASAGNA?) cus from a thing I remembered...if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....so here goes the recipe:
small can of stewed tomatoes drained
100 grams (1/2 cup more or less) bread flour MANITOBA
1 large egg
pinch of salt
knead together till smooth and then cover with a damp cloth so it doesn't dry out while you:
put into the cuisinart(or other handy mom helper) and chop medium fine
2 cups of chopped chard(use only the green part)
1 medium onion
put this into a small non stick pan into which you have put some olive oil (about 1 tbsp) and also 1 tbsp of water..cook slowly till the onion is transparent.
Put the chard into a medium sized bowl, add 1 egg and about a good handfull of grated parmaesan...mix together and if it seems to damp add a bit of bread crumbs...some salt and some pepper and voilààààà...
then you'll need:
some soft cheese like (stracchino - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stracchino) and who says is picture isn't worth a thousand words...how could I even describe what Stracchino is? say 2 cups...
and another egg...and some extra grated parmaesan
at this point it's simple...all you have to do is roll out the dough into two really nice strips about a palm wide and as long as they go...cut them into about 4 squares....and boil them gently in a frying pan with salted water in it (another thing I've learned about cooking which I'm beginning to not adore is there are a lot of really cool shortcuts - like using a frying pan to boil lasagne strips) when they rise to the surface they're done and all you have to do is transfer them to a dishtowel.
Construction of the lasagne:
cassarole with olive oil spread around on the bottom...add the drained stewed tomatoes and squish well with a fork
on this put a layer of noodles
on the noodles put a layer of the chard mixture(use half cus you will only have two layers with filling)
on the chard put about 6 globs of stracchino (about 1 full tsp each)
then noodles, then chard, then stracchino finishing the top layer with noodles....then
TATATATAAAAAA....on top of it all put about 1 cup of stracchino which you have whipped really well with 1 large egg and a small handful of parmaesan cheese which you have grated...it all then goes into the oven for about ??????? at 350° till the cheese layer on top gets really fluffy and golden...it's done, me too
and the hubby was really surprised and said 'in 40 years(so we've been together for only 37 but artistic license is allowed) you've never made LASAGNE?' obviously in his Italian mind the pasta dish I presented was definitely ?
small can of stewed tomatoes drained
