march is gone - marzo partito

31 days of March flew by without leaving a trace of anything if you don't want to count the wonderfully sunny weather and all the tulips, irises, amarillyses and outdoor orchids which are literally exploding all over the garden. Spring sprung in it's glory after a very bitterly cold Siberian adventure which I thought had wiped out all the bulbs. It did a job on the hybiscus on the West Portico. Poor thing sort of looks like a brown branch with brown leaves. The branches are flexible so I almost assume that they just need a good pruning to resprout. That's being very optimistic of course. Big Ben (Benjamin) is having some extra leaf loss but I don't think he's unhappy. Just need to transplant him into the new 60cm vase which I'm picking up on Sunday at the garden center. Of course it is going to be a bitch to get a 2 meter high and 1.5 meter wide Ben out of the 50cm dirt-filled vase. I'm pretty sure a cutter will be used to get the thing open and then I'll just have to drag him over, refill the new vase with good dirt and wrestle him into the new vase which I will then have to retamp after having pulled it into verticle position. It's going to be a spectacular moment for us both....and that finishes March folks

Vi diro in seguito come va a finire.

USE-reuse - USO-riuso

http://vivereverde.blogspot.it/2012/03/decorzione-del-bagno-come-fare-un-porta.html

navigating online I found this wonderful website which has all kinds of interesting econews. Seems reasonable to me that the website is in Italian. Sorry guys....won't be translating each post I share but this one is so simple. Check out the photo of this wonderful bathroom shelf, towel rack made from an old wooden chair....

risotto in a blanket - risotto in trapunta

Risotto in crepes...or if you prefer, risotto in a blanket. It happened that I had lots of risotto with saffron and porcini. So what to do? I put this together. Made crepes with 75 grams of philly, 1 large egg, 3 tablesppons of parmeggiano, salt and pepper, a few tablespoons of cream all whisked together then added 3 tablespoons of rice flour and blended well until I got a smooth crepe-like batter which I then cooked in a little frypan(note last picture - which should have been the first). Put a crepe in the bottom of a buttered oven-proof ceramic bowl(picture directly underneath) and then added the rice which I had reheated well. Put another crepe on top and tucked it in around the rice...voilà. Let it sit until time to eat and then I nuked the bowls...scalding hot and OH SO GOOD!

WEST PORTICO - Portico a Ponente

Recently a blogger friend had some difficulty finding my hometown. She was looking for WEST PORTICO in the boot-shaped peninsula and she said that she really couldn't find it. I told her that I had a giggle at her expense and then felt sort of bad so I decided to tell her the city name...then I decided to find pictures and put them here so that you all can see that I don't live in West Portico on a Portico....but HERE....or rather ABOVE:

Cercava PORTICO A PONENTE.

COMET KING ATKASUKI:

In Italy the mimosa with its beautiful allergy causing flowers is the top of the line gift for women on Woman's Day...sneezing apart it is a lvoely fluffy yellow puff ball of a flower...but it cannot compete with my husband's gift....this magnificent ORCHID!

.

In the boot shaped peninsula these wonderful sweets are called cat's tongues...of course they are supposed to be shaped like little feline tongues but I'm never one to stick with formalities. This recipe was happily plagerised fromt the back of a rice flour bag. The principle ingredient of the recipe is rice flour. Discovered this wonderful flour during lunches and cooking class with a friend who has coeliac disease -for those of you who aren't familiar with it...glutine intollerance is another name :
the sweets are wonderfully sponge cakey and when filled with raspberry jam they are just the cat's meow! PS: the bits and pieces are obviously the baker's taste...

LADY FINGERS

100 grams rice flour
100 grams soft butter
100 grams (use less cus this amount makes them really sweet)
4 egg whites beaten stiff
1 teaspoon vanilla extract....

beat butter till fluffy and add all the ingredients except the whites...when the butter mixture is smooth and creamy fold in the whites until well incorporated. DO NOT mix, FOLD in otherwise the mixture loses its air pockets and will become a brick....put the mixture into a pastry bag and squirt it onto a cookie sheet which you have previously lined with parchment paper. Bake until golden at 350°...cool on rack. Use the parchment to pull whole thing out of pan so that it cools on rack without forming humidity underneath. Once barely tepid cut exactly in half and place one half on a clean cutting board. Spread your favorite jam on the half which is on the board and cover with the other half.Using a serated knife cut into squares and place on serving tray. Use a fine mesh sieve to sprinkle powdered sugar (4X) on the cut squares. If you really want to make lady fingers just use the pastry bag to make lots of fingers on the parchment covered baking sheet. Attention baking time....fingers burn quicker than squares....brilliant statement!

1 cucchiaino estratto vaniglia
4 albumi sbattuti a neve

Infornare a 180° affinche golden. Poi tagliare a strisce o quadretti a piacere.
